VERDICT

The Bounty Hunter TK4 Tracker IV Metal Detector is a popular entry-level metal detector that has the easy-to-use credentials to back up that popularity.

The TK4 Tracker IV Metal Detector by Bounty Hunter has consistently been one of the highly ranked metal detectors with each new version of this model that comes out. What is it about this metal detector that makes it such a popular choice?

This low-frequency, rugged metal detector is outfitted with many, if not all, of the features that a beginning metal detector hobbyist should focus on learning how to use. Plus, it is streamlined. But we’ll get more into that later.

First, let’s mention the company behind this impressive machine. This is not the first metal detector that Bounty Hunter has made, and that shows in both the quality of the construction and the design in each of their metal detectors. Their metal detectors are made with the beginner and the intermediate hunter in mind.

Bounty Hunter’s parent company is First Texas Products. You might know this name as they also own Fisher and Teknetics. Products made by Bounty Hunter are largely manufactured in the USA just like many of the products from First Texas Products.

Many people might be leery of buying a machine that is specifically made for beginners because they believe that means it is weak or low quality. When it comes to metal detectors, that is not the case. The idea of beginner metal detectors has more to do with the features and manual options on each model.

If you were to pick up a metal detector that costs thousands of dollars today, you wouldn’t be able to effectively use any of the features that caused it to cost so much! For that reason, it is always recommended that hobbyists start with an entry-level metal detector so that they can learn more about hunting and how it works before they invest so much money.

You’ll see in the following Features section just how much this entry-level metal detector has to offer! Whether or not it’s the right metal detector for you, you will have to wait until the end of this article to find out!

Features

The Bounty Hunter TK4 Tracker IV Metal Detector is an advanced entry-level metal detector that is in the lower end of the metal detector price range. This rugged metal detector has a great balance of form and function.

While it doesn’t have a large LCD screen or some of the visual gauges that other detectors have, it is lighter while still being tall enough for an adult to use. This balance is great for beginners who have no idea what they’re getting into yet!

The Tracker IV is equipped with what is known as preset ground balance. Ground balance is important when hunting because it helps to eliminate feedback noise that can be caused by minerals in the ground. The preset function doesn’t need you to do anything: the Tracker will automatically minimize the effects that mineralization could have on your readings.

The TK4 Tracker IV’s frequency runs at 6.7 kHz, which is a very low frequency. This makes this detector an especially great choice for hunting for loose coins, jewelry, and similar small, metal objects. VLF (very low frequency) metal detectors are among the most recommended types of a detector for both beginners and intermediate hunters.

The low frequency enables you to find coin-sized objects at depths of up to eight inches. Larger objects, like a buried metal chest, could be found at depths of up to two feet. The main gauge on the Tracker IV is the depth monitor, and this could give you an idea of how far you need to dig to find your buried treasure.

Additionally, the knob setup on this model makes it quick and easy to switch between different modes, optimize your detection depth, and even eliminate targets that are interfering. There are knobs for mode, power, sensitivity, and discrimination control, and by learning how to adjust these, you will find that your search gets easier than usual.

Those three controls are all that you will need to learn to operate this model. The sensitivity knob helps you pick up better readings while the discrimination knob helps to filter out trash metal like soda can tabs and other junk. Could it get any easier to start hunting?

Finally, the search coil on the Tracker IV has one more secret that helps it stand out from other VLF models. It is submersible in shallow water! While you still need to be careful about not getting the control center of the detector wet, you can do some water searching when using this model which will expand your search area greatly.

Pros:

  • Has ¼” headphone jack
  • Simple knob control
  • Preset ground control
  • Lightweight with adjustable height
  • Helpful, detailed manual
  • Can be used straight out of the box
  • Perfect for beginners

Cons

The audio system on this model is limited to a 2-tone feedback response, and there is no LCD screen to help differentiate those tones, so you will have to learn them. Additionally, this model consumes a large amount of battery life. Two 9V batteries can be expected to last between 20 and 30 hours of use, depending on what sensitivity you use.

Verdict

So, what’s the final verdict on the Bounty Hunter TK4 Tracker IV Metal Detector? This is an ideal metal detector for beginners and for those who never really learned how to manage the controls on a metal detector.

The simple design makes this fun-to-use model a great teaching device as well as an adventure device, so keep that in mind when you are deciding whether or not this particular detector makes sense for you.

Finally, this model is lightweight and comfortable to use. It’s easy to become overwhelmed with a hobby like metal detecting where there is so much that you could learn; this model bridges that problem with ease, making the task accessible to everyone.
